and my embrel injection is still extremely painful! i have tried numbing with ice before doing the injection, and taking it out of the fridge a few hours before and it is still really painful and reduces me to tears every week.
i have no problems with mtx injection, i can't even feel it any more. it isn't the needle that gets me with the embrel, just the substance going in stings so much! you'd have thought after a year of doing it every week i'd be used to it, but infact it takes me 15 minutes to sike myself up, and 3-4 minutes to push all the injection in.
does anyone have any other tips?

things are really stressful at school at the moment. my first exam is in 8 weeks, and only 13 weeks now untill i leave!
i also now have a new boyfriend :) we have seeing eachother on and off for about 5 months because he's quite alot older than me (23) but mum and dad have approved and now i'm really happy, he's lovely and really supportive. i suppose i just have to try to find a balance where i focus more on my exams so that my parents can't blame him for anything. i struggle to keep him off my mind though! he's in the RAF and his base is a few hours away, so i only really see him at weekends.

i hope everyone is well, sorry i haven't been on here in a while to keep you all updated, been sooooo busy!
xx

He sounds lovely Hannah, you are well cool to live life so full. Sorry no tips about the enbrel itself. Only thing I can think about is to look into some self hypnosis techniques. They can really work - when i had both my babies I used them to accept the pain as productive and to not mind the contractions. It was basically positive self-talk-trance kind of thing. Had to practice it a fair bit. I also use those techniques a lot for managing general RA pain, kind of adapted from the natal hypnotherapy stuff. I'm not sure where to start from where you're at, I'll have a think and a look round for you. Maybe someone else here would know?

Good luck with the long slog on the exams, so much work. Imagine the happiness of summer with it all behind you and job well done ... glorious:)

Hi Hannah

I inject enbrel and yes, it does sting. I think the idea of positive thinking/ meditation is a agood idea.

I'm glad you have a nice boyfriend, and your mum & dad like him.

Good luck with your exams!

Soooooo glad your parents approve of your boyfriend. He sounds lovely.

Sorry I can't help with the injections - I am a tablet only woman!

Keeping everything crossed for your exams. What are you going to do when you leave school?

Hi hannah

pleased to read about the new love interest! lol I always went for older men and then I married a younger one! Pleased mum and dad like him.

the enbrel injections used to sting me too. I took paracetamol 40mins before and puriton. the ice numbing I found hurt more, also found the alcohol swab seemed to make it worse, so just wash the area with soap and water or let the area where you wiped dry.

sticking somewhere with more fat like your tum can also help, also the angle makes a difference 45 degrees hurt more for me but a change in angle and speed of injection might help no end.

give the enbrel nurse a ring and ask for some advice.

Always interested in how you are getting on.

Love

HI Hannah,

Lovely to hear how well you are doing and you've got a new boyfriend.
I inject Humira and it is painful but only for a few seconds. Jenni's idea to ring the enbrel nurse is good.
Good luck with your exams. Are you getting extra time for them with having RA?

Love, Doreen xx

Hi Hannah

I know what you mean about the sting. I've only been on Enbrel for 12 weeks. The nurses that came out twice to train for self injecting (from the Company supplying the injections)mentioned that there is a Myclic for Enbrel for people having difficulties with needles for example.

Why don't you contact your Rheumy team or the company supplying the drugs and see if they can help? That's what they're they're for. No need to suffer unnecessarily if at all possible!

P.S. Work hard during the week and by the weekend you'll deserve a break!

Hi Hannah

I have children doing exams this summer, Year 10 GCSEs and AS levels so I know where you are coming from. All that work is worth it in the end though and a lovely summer to look forward to! What next have you decided yet?

I have a daughter in a long distance relationship. She sees her boyfriend at the weekend, like you, but has the weekdays to do other things and it works wellThumpUp. She's always sad when it's Sunday night though! It's great that your boyfriend is supportive and approved of by your family.

As regards the Enbrel, other advice offered here is good. It might be worth thinking about changing to the epi-pen if the needle insertion continues to be a problem. It took me a while to get used to injecting but Jenni's suggestion of using a more fatty area is a good one. I take my injection out of the fridge about two hours before I use it, grab a bit of tummy fat (sounds gross doesn't it?!) and insert the needle at about 90 degrees (45 degs didn't work for me!), take a deep breath and slowly release it as you push the fluid in. Then very quickly pull the needle straight out. I now know the three best spots where I feel absolutely nothing! Taking several minutes to insert the Enbrel might actually be causing you more pain than it should as it is seeping into the surrounding tissue whilst you are still injecting. Hope you manage to sort out your own successful technique soon!
Take care,

Lyn x

Thankyou for all your advice, I will definately try some of these methods on Monday! I usually sit down, so i may try standing up and also pushing the fluid in fast instead of slowly.

As for exams and plans for after school, I do get extra time but I have never really used it lol - probably something i should start doing, but when you're under exam circumstances you're eagar to get out! My next exam is on Tuesday, I'm doing a resit for maths to try and get more UMS points. Then the rest are in May/June.
I have applied to go to a college about 25 minutes away on the bus, to take Chemistry, Biology, English Combined and Physcology, I have an interview on the 4th of March.

Hi everyone,

Exam went really well i think, i'm praying i did ok! Next week I recieve my Unit 2 results for sciences.
On Monday I injected my Embrel really quick, and even though it was scary it actually wasn't as painful.
I am really happy at the moment and looking forward to spending the weekend with Ricky. However i'm quite worried about my Dad. He's had palputations for about 6 months but recently they have been getting worse. He was at work in the practice and felt one come on, so nipped over to a nurse, who faffed around so much by the time she had hooked him up to the heart monitoring machine the palputation was over. He has always just got on with things but I keep getting a feeling the something isn't right.

Glad that the exam went well. Hoping that next weeks results are good.
Good news that the injection wasn't so bad this time. Do you think it was because you gave it quickly?

It is a worry about your dad but at least he is at work in the right environment to get help if it is needed. The nurse will get it right next time I am sure.

Have a special weekend with Ricky. Don't let anything spoil your feeling of happiness. You deserve it after last year's misery.

Hi Hannah,
It's lovely to hear how happy you are and I hope it continues for you.
Glad the exam went well, hope the results are good.
Try not to worry about your Dad, maybe just nag him a bit to get himself tested. He knows that he should!
Have a great weekend with Ricky.

Hi Hannah,

Good to hear your fantastic news and it sounds like you are on course to doing well with your exams. Sorry to hear that you have had some problems with the Embrel, however, pleased to hear that the you didn't experience any pain with your last jab. If it does in the future perhaps you may wish to consider Lyn's suggestion of using an epi-pen, I use one for Humira and find it easy to use.

If you are worried about your Dad which is understandable, perhaps having a word with him about your concerns will prompt him to look after himself, and put your mind at ease. I have found that Doctors and nurses are terrible at practicing what they preach, and sometimes need gentle reminders to look after their own health whilst they are busy attending to their patients'.

It is important when study to get the balance right between studying and having fun; you are on the right track, have a great weekend with your boyfriend and good luck with your exam results next week.

Take care,

love,

Barbara
